THE ‘FALLA’ MONUMENT OF “EL LLEÓ DE MESTALLA” WILL REAPPEAR 95 YEARS LATER

The Instituto Universitario de Restauración del Patrimonio of the Universitat Politècnica de València, the ‘Falla community’ “Plaza de la Reina, Paz y San Vicente” —known as “Falla Tio Pep”— and Manolo García —a reputed Fallero artist who made the failures of the city Council of the years 2014-2017— join forces to accurately replicate the ‘Falla’ monument of 1924, “El Lleó de Mestalla”, locating in the same place where the original was sited 95 years ago.

“El Lleó de Mestalla” was a ‘Falla’ munument inspired in the first 5 years of València Football Club, formed by a huge cup topped by its famous lion. The cup was surrounded by the replicas of three players of the club: a hockey player, a footballer and an athlete, as well as including a scene of a Valencian woman holding a tray of meringues.

The reproduction will be performed in the same way as it was done with the original one, using the same materials.

The “Plantà” will be done in such a way that photographs will be made from the same angles and positions that are in the historical archives of the time.

This performance is part of the celebration of the centenary of Valencia Football Club (1919-2019). The club was established from 1921 in the ‘Bar Torino’, which was sited on the border of the demarcation of this ‘Falla community’.

The leadership and execution by the Instituto Universitario de Restauración del Patrimonio of the Universitat Politècnica de València will be carried out by José Luis Regidor and Antoni Colomina.
